Rett syndrome

 Hello Everyone!

Today I'm going to tell you about a disorder that I recently started reading about-Rett Syndrome. Only recently have I become interested in this topic and in the near future I want to watch a movie called "Silent Angels", which introduces the issue of Rett Syndrome. Rett syndrome is an inherited genetic disorder that was first described in 1966 by the Austrian pediatrician Andreas Rett.

Rett syndrome is an extremely insidious disease. It attacks after a few or even several months of proper child development, it affects almost exclusively girls. After a period of normal growth and development, it gradually slows down. Initially, the child loses control of his hands, then brain development deteriorates, walking difficulties, epilepsy and intellectual disability begin. There are currently no effective treatments for Rett syndrome - not even the symptoms themselves.

The effects of the disease can only be mitigated by long-term, systematic and difficult rehabilitation. After birth, the baby develops normally. The first symptoms of the disease usually appear between 6 and 18 months of age. Rett syndrome causes that a properly developing girl becomes quieter every day, cuts herself off from her surroundings and loses the will to play. In the case of this disease, there is a developmental regression, withdrawal of already acquired skills.

Girls with Rett disease are called silent angels because they are beautiful, sensitive and wise, but they are locked in a disabled body that prevents them from communicating with the world. However, modern technology makes it possible for people with Rett syndrome to communicate with other people, it is possible thanks to devices that track the movement of the eyeballs. You can control a computer with your eyesight, and after spending time learning how to use this technology, people with Rett syndrome are able, for example, to decide what they would like to wear, eat, or feel cold or warm. The problem, of course, is the cost of such a device, because it costs about 20,000 zlotych.

Rett syndrome very rarely affects boys, and it is said that boys suffering from Rett syndrome die in utero. Currently, there are only 7 boys with Rett Syndrome in the world today. Of course, it must be remembered that very often the problem is an appropriate diagnosis.
