Bari FOOD
Hello Everyone!
I would like to invite You to a new series of a few posts about my wonderful journey to Bari in Apulia, Italy. I will tell you about amazing sights and historical structures that I have had a pleasure to admire. First, this post is about the most important thing in every adventure – food. Apulia has amazing culinary, that you are going to taste every day. Let’s start.
The most
basic dish in Bari, which you can spot on every bakery, is also the tastiest.
Focaccia is a pizza-like pancake, made of
fluffy dough similar to donut, with little to none topping, mostly tomatoes,
olives and oil. It is very filling and a pleasure to eat. I had a focaccia
almost every second breakfast.
One of
wonders in Italy and especially Bari, are all servings focused on cheese. My
personal favourite was Panzerotti, a very big dumpling, similar to calzone, but
filled to the brim with mozzarella cheese and sometimes ham.
It is
always served burning hot with all the insides melted. Panzerotti tastes smells
just amazing.
Bari, as a
port town, is known for the sea food. Two most impressive, that require a lot
of bravery, are octopuses and sea urchins.
Octopuses can be bought on almost every sandwich shop, cooked and put in
fancy burger-like buns, called Panini. These are tastier than you think!
Raw seafood
can be found on street market near harbor. Every second day sailors show up to
sell fresh fishes and more for a very low price, ready to eat.
The most
impressing was sea urchin, served raw with a bun. I have to admit, they taste
interesting, but I would recommend it only to biggest fans of the seafood.
