Matera di Sassi
Hello Everyone!
Finally yet
importantly of my adventures is Bari was spend in the most interesting city I
have ever visited. It was called Matera and is one of the oldest human
settlements in the history of mankind, established around 10th
millennium BC.
Whole city
is built on the cliffs of a canyon formed around the Gravina River. From one
side of the canyon you can see caves dug in stone that once were homes of
people thousands years ago. Most of the historical part of the city is very
interestingly build.
Houses
are caves carved in the face of the stone wall with façade made of decorated
limestone. Even thou the city looks beautiful, the conditions to live are very
hard.
Up to
second half of the 20th century, the government in Rome had no idea
of its existence. Only due to statistical office, the word about the city came
to public knowledge, as a place with gigantic mortality among infants. After
that, public services installed pluming and official hospitals in near
neighborhood, allowing the citizens to live in normal conditions. Soon after
that, the whole city became UNESCO World Heritage site.
An
interesting part of Matera’s history is that was a place where the movie The
Passion of The Christ by Mel Gibson was filmed, with little-to-none scenography
changes. The director decided that the city looked just like it was copied from
the last two millenniums.
Bye Bye!
