Christmas disches

Hello everyone!

I hope that the topic of Christmas has not bored you yet, because for today I have another interesting topic related to Christmas. And exactly food. I will tell you about what dishes we can most often find on Christmas Eve table and I will try to give you their meaning, symbolism.
As some of you may already know, there should be 12 dishes on the Christmas table according to tradition. The number 12 has many meanings, it can symbolize 12 apostles, 12 months of the year or 12 generations of Israel.

I will exchange 12 dishes for you, of course we can meet others in every home, as well as in other parts of Poland. That's why my list will be quite subjective.
  • mushroom soup
  • borscht (the soup made with beetroots) with “uszka”
  • fried carp
  • patties with cabbage
  • cabbage with mushrooms
  • herring in oil
  • compote of dried fruits
  • Greek-style fish
  • cabbage with white beans
  • red cabbage
  • dumplings with cabbage and mushrooms
  • makiełki (poppy seed-based dessert)
And now it's time for the symbolism of several Christmas Eve dishes.
Christmas Eve borscht thanks to its beetroot content  adds beauty. In addition, red beets will ensure success and prosperity and guarantee long years of healthy life. Eating even a few tablespoons of mushroom soup should ensure body health, lasting strength, vitality and sobriety of mind. The fish on the Christmas table is a symbol of fertility and rebirth. It is associated with resurrection and immortality. The underestimated cabbage provides strength and vitality. It will help protect against physical and mental illness. Although poppy is associated with death and the end, it also means help. Poppy, just like cereals, symbolizes prosperity and fertility.
I won't go into further details. That's enough for today.

Bye Bye!
